R10 PREVIEW: CATS & LIONS TO DO BATTLE IN SUBARU OVAL GOLD COAST DERBY

A huge day of footy at SUBARU tomorrow with the Cats taking on local rivals Palm Beach followed by women’s football into the evening.

Broadbeach, fresh off a commanding win in Noosa last weekend have been boosted by the availability of several academy stars, after all performed admirably in the recent academy series and NAB League games. Into the senior side come youngsters Finn BROWN, Cody HARRINGTON (Broadbeach juniors) and Bodhi UWLAND, with the later returning for the first time since round 1, bringing eye-catching form at both SUNS VFL and Academy level. Also returning to the side is the classy Sam WEDDELL, whose work commitments now allow greater continuity for the second half of the season. Out of the side go X MCMAHON who injured a calf early in the match last week which will see him sidelined for about 3 weeks and Al RAYNER who sustained a corkie last week and hasn’t been able to get up for the match. Daniel GROSE and Darcy IRWIN also go out of the side.

Palm Beach are going through somewhat of a transitional phase with several key players moving on at the end of last season however still boast experienced players Jason Burge, Jack Anthony, Jimmy Holland, Jon Croad and Nick Crowley and are not to be underestimated. The likely matchup featuring the in-form James GLEDHILL with ex Collingwood and Fremantle forward Jack Anthony will be a key feature of the match and no doubt Coach O’Brien will be looking to limit supply. Tom BETSON will lock horns again with Croad, and quelling the left footer’s influence will certainly be important to allow our in form trio of ERICKSON, ARMITAGE (who would probably be the Grogan medal favorite currently) and LOWER. Lookout also tomorrow for the potent small forward trio of Nick BURTON, Brandon CHADWICK and Sam JASPER who combined for 14 goals last week and of course the MAYOR who has a lazy 25 goals from his last 3 appearances. Broadbeach juniors Hamo HOWARD and Brayden TAYLOR have retained their places in the side with BT averaging over 20 possessions a game in his appearances to date in what has been an encouraging start to his senior career.

The Development Team will field what looks to be their strongest side for the season to date. Jai LYONS, Luke DC, Dyl LANCASTER, and Jasper SHOENMAKER all return from injury/illness and promising academy ruck Ryan PICKERING will provide first supply to the midfield boosted by Jonah SEMMLER who also returns. Daniel GROSE and Darcy IRWIN also strengthen the side. It was also encouraging to see well credentialed recruit Ben KERNICK training this week and we look forward to his return in the weeks ahead as the development team looks to build on a 3 match winning streak.

Our Colts have some handy inclusions this week including Jared ECKERSLEY, who will play his first match representing the senior club. After injury curtailed the early part of his season, Jared’s form in the academy series still led to his selection in the Queensland under 17 squad. Congratulations also to Kaleb BAINES (also returning tomorrow), Cody HARRINGTON (seniors), KAI Reynoldson (rested) and Taine Dawson (rested).

Our senior women’s teams will round out the evening with our Division 1 side take on Kedron at 4:45 pm and the Development Squad take on Labrador at 6:30 pm.

Good luck to all teams.
