RD4 PREVIEW: CATS SET FOR MAGPIE ANZAC CLASH

The Cats travel up the M1 tomorrow for second consecutive week to face the Sherwood Magpies. The Magpies were well beaten last week by Surfers and despite naming a relatively inexperienced side will no doubt be keen to atone for in front of their faithful.

Again despite winning well last week and seemingly coming through the match unscathed, Broadbeach have been forced into 4 changes for this week’s match. Long time servant James ROYES pinged a quad at training last night, and Rhys CLARK and Ryan GILMORE have been rewarded for strong form and will line up for the Sharks in their clash with Aspley. The Mayor MONCRIEFF is unavailable this week, and the Cats will be looking to the likes of WINTER and MCMAHON to fill the goal kicking void left.

For a 3rd week running, coach O’Brien has named a debutant, this time former Geelong Amateurs tall Daniel GROSE, who has been in excellent form in the reserves and named best 2 weeks running. Also into the is young and athletic key position player Al RAYNER, playing his first senior for a couple of seasons, again after showing excellent from in the 11:30 game both weeks. Connor MUNRO and Kai SHEERS are also welcomed back into the side after missing last week’s trip to Morningside.

The key to the match will be to adjust to the dimensions of the Sherwood ground which along with PBC, would be the smallest ground in the competition. Withstanding the early pressure that occurred in both matches to date is also key to the Cats fortunes as the Maggies will no doubt come firing after the disappointment of last week.

In the reserves, interest will lie with the debutants of 2 teenaged Broadbeach juniors, being Brayden TAYLOR (BT) and Kai REYNOLDSON, son of former AFL/VFL star Stephen Reynoldson. Good luck fellas. Jacob WELSH, former captain of St Mary’s in the strong Geelong Football League will play also after relocating. Our colts under coach Matt “Crackers” Dwyer have been building nicely at training and will be looking to secure their first win for the season.

For those unable to make the trip to Brisbane, all QAFL games are posted to QAFL Vimeo about 24 hours post match and there is a full round of Round 1 juniors at the club.

Our women’s teams also begin their 2021 campaign this year at home Saturday from 4:45 pm , with our Div 1 side taking on Morningside and our newly formed Div 2 side taking on Jimboomba straight afterwards. Coach Goodman has been well pleased with the commitment from all players pre-season and co-captains Rebecca GOODWIN and Holly THOMPSON are confident of a great season. One player to watch for a big season is Maddie GAULT, a former NTFLW premier league player, adjudged best afield in that competition’s Grand final in 2017.

Good luck to all players and teams.
